Wexler Supports Bill Empowering Homeowners and Encouraging Lenders to Refinance Mortgage Helping Families Save Their Homes Act up for Consideration in House Today
(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, expressed his support for the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act, which is up for consideration today in the House of Representatives. The Helping Families Save Their Homes Act enables bankruptcy judges to modify the terms of mortgages, which could reduce foreclosures across the country by up to 20 percent. This legislation compliments a plan recently announced by President Barack Obama that will help up to 9 million families restructure or refinance their mortgages to avoid foreclosure.
“We cannot lift ourselves out of this economic crisis until we address the foreclosure epidemic in this country,” said Congressman Wexler. “Too many families in South Florida have lost their homes, and too many communities have seen property values plummet as a result. I have heard from responsible homeowners across my district who are struggling to make payments and have been ignored by their lender. South Florida will undoubtedly benefit from this legislation. It does not cost tax-payers a dime and will help families renegotiate their mortgage terms and help many more avoid the devastating outcomes of bankruptcy and foreclosure. I hope my colleagues in Congress will join me in supporting this bill because it stands to protect the financial future of so many Americans."
The Helping Families Save Their Homes Act gives bankruptcy judges the ability to modify mortgage terms – just as investors, real estate speculators, corporations, and family farmers already have the ability to do. The legislation also includes new incentives for negotiating affordable home loans, which is central to boosting the nation’s struggling real estate sector. It protects lenders who help families in danger of losing their homes from investor lawsuits, lowers fees paid by borrowers and lenders, and provides $1,000 payments to servicers for each successful loan refinancing.
Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
