Wexler Resolution on Missing Floridian Robert Levinson Passes House Foreign Affairs Committee Resolution urges Obama Administration to use all diplomatic tools including engaging Iran to return Levinson to the United States
(Washington, DC) Today, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs voted unanimously to pass a resolution introduced by Congressman Robert Wexler (FL-19), Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (FL-23), and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) regarding Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent from Coral Springs, Florida who has been missing since March 2007 -- following a business trip to Kish Island, Iran. A similar resolution introduced by Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) passed the Senate earlier this month. The resolution is part of an effort by Florida lawmakers to urge the Obama Administration to utilize every diplomatic tool at its disposal to engage the Iranian government regarding Robert Levinson’s disappearance and to make every effort possible to bring him back to the US. The resolution also urges Iranian officials to fulfill their commitments to cooperate with the Levinson family, the American government and the international community to determine Mr. Levinson’s whereabouts.
“The unanimous support of this resolution by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs is clear statement that Congress views returning Robert Levinson to his family in Florida a top priority for the United States. The resolution is also a signal that Congress stands shoulder to shoulder with the Levinson family who have painstakingly waited for over two years for information regarding Robert’s whereabouts and worked tirelessly in the US and international community to raise Mr. Levinson’s case at the highest-levels,” said Congressman Wexler. “Moving forward, it is essential that the Obama Administration continue to raise Robert Levinson’s case in every appropriate venue and use every diplomatic tool – including direct engagement with Iran -- to determine his whereabouts and bring him home. I believe that passage of the resolution in the Foreign Affairs committee is a critical step forward, and it is my sincere hope it will move as quickly as possible to the House floor for a vote.”
The resolution is available here for download.
Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
