Wexler Sends Letter to Senate President Atwater and Speaker Cretul Urging Legislature Action on Mini-Cobra Federal Subsidy
State Legislature Must Act in Order to Ensure Floridians Receive Benefits

(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) sent a letter to Florida Senate President Jeff Atwater and Speaker Larry Cretul regarding legislation needed in Florida that would make workers recently laid off by small businesses eligible for the 65 percent federal COBRA subsidy enacted by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In his letter, Congressman Wexler explains that if Florida’s State Legislature does not take action, many recently laid-off Floridians who were previously working for small businesses would not be able to receive this significant benefit during a time of great economic distress.

Individuals who became unemployed September 1, 2008 or later are eligible to receive a 65 percent subsidy to help shoulder the cost of continuing health coverage under COBRA by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The economic recovery legislation also extended this benefit to states with “mini-COBRA’s,” which apply to small businesses. In order for former employees of small businesses in Florida to be eligible for this crucial benefit, legislation is needed at the state level to extend mini-COBRA coverage retroactively to workers who lost their jobs between September 1st, 2008 to February 16, 2009 – the day before President Barack Obama signed the economic stimulus package.

“Aside from its investments in infrastructure, energy, and education, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides much-needed help to Americans weather the storm of these trying economic times,” said Congressman Wexler. “The cost of paying for health care under COBRA is often astronomical, putting enormous strain on unemployed individuals struggling to keep their families afloat. I have heard from unemployed constituents who were working for small businesses and who were intended to get this mini-COBRA subsidy under the economic stimulus package. It is my hope that the Florida State Legislature takes immediate action to help these Floridians get the assistance that they deserve."

Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
