Wexler Supports Obama Administration Decision to Revamp U.S. Missile Defense Policy New American Policy Critical to Addressing Iranian Threat
(Washington, DC) Congressman Robert Wexler, Chairman of the Europe Subcommittee in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, expressed his strong support for the Obama Administration's decision to revamp U.S. missile defense policy. The Obama Administration's decision came after a comprehensive review process led by the U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. According to the White House, the new missile defense plan “will feature deployments of increasingly-capable sea- and land-based missile interceptors, primarily upgraded versions of the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), and a range of sensors in Europe to defend against the growing ballistic missile threat from Iran.” Implementation of the plan will begin in 2011. In 2007, Wexler held a Europe Subcommittee hearing focused on the Bush Administration's Europe based missile defense plan, expressing serious reservations about the cost and viability of the this program as well as the lack of European support for the plan.
"I applaud the Obama Administration's bold decision to revamp America’s missile defense policy and develop a plan that protects the United States, Europe and our allies, and addresses more immediate threats, including short and medium-range missiles from Iran," said Congressman Wexler. "While our allies in Poland and the Czech Republic should be applauded for their unwavering support of U.S., NATO and international efforts to address ballistic missile threats, it is clear after a comprehensive review that American and European security interests will be better served with a more effective and flexible missile defense plan. As President Obama, Secretary Gates and the Administration put in place a new missile defense strategy, it is incumbent on the U.S. to consult and work closely with allies, including Poland, Czech Republic and NATO partners, to address their security concerns as well as strengthen the transatlantic community’s collective defense posture.”
Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
