Wexler Urges Obama Administration to Admit Greece into Visa Waiver Program Letter to Secretary Clinton and Secretary Napolitano Highlights Greece’s Role as Critical American Ally
(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, along with several Members of Congress sent a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urging the Obama Administration to support Greece’s application to participate in the Visa Waiver Program. Greece, a longstanding North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally of the United States, has met the formal criteria for participation in the Visa Waiver Program.
“I join my colleagues in Congress in urging the Obama Administration to move as quickly as possible to include our NATO ally Greece in the Visa Waiver Program. Greece is critical strategic partner that has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in our efforts to promote democracy and rule of law and in our campaign to combat terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. I strongly believe that Greece’s participation in the Visa Waiver Program would improve our national security and enhance our economic, cultural, security and political partnership with Greece. The Visa Waiver Program is a critically important asset to the United States economy and to our overall bilateral relationships with our European allies. It is hope that Greece will join the Visa Waiver Program in the near future, and I stand with my colleagues in Congress to assist Secretary Clinton, Secretary Napolitano and the Administration in that effort.”
The text of the letter and list of cosigners is available here.
Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
