House Passes Wexler Resolution on Global Road Safety Resolution Calls for Action on Worldwide Road Traffic Injury and Fatality Epidemic
(Washington, DC) Today, the House of Representatives unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 74, a resolution introduced by Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) shedding light on the issue of global road safety and encouraging the Obama Administration to take an active role in the upcoming Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Moscow. The Moscow conference, which was inspired by the passage of United Nations Resolution 62/244 in March 2008, is the culmination of a five-year effort by a global community of stakeholders from multilateral and bilateral institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, academia and civil society to raise international awareness and call for a global response commensurate with the magnitude of the worldwide road traffic injury and fatality epidemic.
“Every year, road travel results in the deaths of 1.3 million people. This is the equivalent of ten jumbo jets crashing every day,” said Congressman Wexler. “Many of these tragic deaths could be prevented by collaborative efforts between the United States, foreign governments, and international organizations aimed at raising road standards and preventing traffic injuries. I hope that the unanimous passing of this resolution by the House of Representatives sheds light on this global health epidemic, and I look forward to working with the Obama Administration and my colleagues on the Congressional Caucus on Global Road Safety on this important issue.”
A copy of the resolution is available here.
Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
