Wexler: President Obama Offers Americans Honest Assessment of US Economy

(Washington, DC) Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) has released the following statement in reaction to President Barack Obama’s speech this evening before the Joint Session of Congress:

“For far too long, Americans have listened to leaders who have avoided talking about the real challenges faced by our country. This past November, when we voted for change, we also demanded honesty. Tonight, President Barack Obama leveled with the American people. He provided us with an intellectually honest assessment of how we must confront our economic challenges, while also offering us the hope and confidence we need to persevere through these difficult times.

“Our problems are interconnected, and I strongly support the President in his conviction that to get America back on a path of economic progress and fiscal responsibility, we must tackle longstanding problems like the outrageous cost of health care, our continued dependence on foreign oil, and the fact that our education system fails too many of our children.

“I was pleased to hear President Obama emphasize that America can overcome these major challenges while at the same time work towards reducing our deficit and embracing honest accounting in our budget. Far too many politicians claim that we cannot do both, rather than recognizing that efforts like reducing government spending on health care and lowering insurance costs for Americans can and should be part of the same effort.

“Tonight, the President’s speech also reminded each of us in Congress that there is so much more work to be done, especially when it comes to creating new jobs and keeping families in their homes. I am more committed than ever to working with my colleagues in Congress and with the Obama Administration to tackle these challenges and make real progress for the people of South Florida and our nation.”

Congressman Robert Wexler is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Recently, Congressman Wexler served as an advisor on Middle East issues to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.
