Congressman Wexler to Hold Tax Rebate Workshop in Margate

(Margate, FL) Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) will hold a tax workshop focusing on the provisions of the recently passed economic stimulus package this Thursday, March 20th, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at the Margate Focal Point Senior Center.  Throughout the month of March, hundreds of South Florida residents have attended Congressman Wexler’s tax seminars.  The workshops have been geared towards individuals who do not typically owe income taxes and need help determining their eligibility for tax rebates and filing with the IRS.  Thursday’s workshop, which is free and open to the public, will be attended by representatives from Congressman Wexler’s office in Boca Raton, tax-payer advocates from the IRS, and representatives from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).

Under the economic stimulus package, individuals who file a 1040A income tax form and earn between $3,000 and $75,000 will be eligible for stimulus checks from $300-$600, while married couples and parents may eligible for additional money.  Seniors and disabled individuals who do not typically file income taxes may qualify for rebates if their adjusted gross income is at least $3,000, even if it is accrued from Social Security payments, Veteran’s Benefits, and other government programs.

“Our economy is undoubtedly struggling,” Congressman Wexler said. “Middle class Americans are being squeezed by an expensive, misguided war with no end in sight, outrageous gas prices, skyrocketing health care and prescription drug costs, and the mortgage crisis.  It is absolutely critical that everyone knows if they have received at least $3,000 in income this year, they should file with the IRS and ensure their eligibility for a stimulus check.  It is my hope that these workshops will help educate the senior community so that every individual in South Florida can get the financial assistance that he or she deserves.”

The Margate Focal Point Senior Center is located at 6009 NW 10th Street, Margate, FL, 33063.  For more information, contact District Director Wendi Lipsich.
