Wexler Releases Statement Following Supreme Court Decision on Detainees

(Washington, DC) Today Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in response to the United States Supreme Court's decision reaffirming habeas corpus at Guantanamo Bay:

"Today's landmark decision is a significant victory for the rule of law in this country.  The Court unequivocally stated that the right to be heard in court cannot be denied for any reason.  That some detainees at Guantanamo Bay have been held for six years without even being allowed to challenge their detention is a black mark on our history.  The right of habeas corpus is a fundamental principle of our Constitution, and to deny it for any reason is simply un-American.  The Supreme Court's decision is a victory for the Constitution, and quite frankly a victory for common sense.  I hope that this victory is the first step in restoring America's commitment to the rule of law that has been so notably absent in this Administration."
