Wexler Votes for American Clean Energy and Security Act

(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) voted with a majority of his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.  This legislation will spur the development of renewable energy industries and create thousands of new jobs in America, reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming, and help America achieve independence from foreign oil. The bill also enacts a market-based solution to reducing carbon emissions by allowing companies to purchase and trade renewable energy credits. An independent, bipartisan analysis by the Congressional Budget Office has concluded that this “cap and trade” program will cost Americans less than 40 cents a day by 2012.

Key provisions include:

A renewable electricity standard that requires utility companies to produce 6 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020, and 20 percent of their energy from renewable sources by the year 2020.

Billions of dollars in financial incentives and investments for renewable energy industry, which is estimated to create over 1.7 million jobs across the country and over 95,000 in Florida.

New energy efficiency standards for buildings, appliances, and industries that will help America drastically reduce energy consumption and ultimately lower energy costs.
