Wexler Votes to Expand Domestic Oil Production, Invest in Renewable Energy Solutions

(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) released the following statement on the passage of the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Taxpayer Protection Act in the House of Representatives:

“Oil companies have been taking advantage of American-owned resources by enjoying excessive tax-payer funded subsidies and record profits from prices at the pump. President Bush and Republicans have been handing our tax dollars over to oil executives and ultimately hindering our goal of energy independence, and today, Congress stood up to end this unconscionable practice.

“Many Americans have called for an expansion of domestic oil production, and this legislation responsibly answers that call. At the same time, it also ensures that Americans actually receive a fair return from increased drilling, because our nation’s energy future rests on our ability to develop renewable, and affordable, energy solutions.

“America’s economy is in turmoil. In Florida and across the country, rising unemployment is devastating our communities.  This legislation will spur job creation and economic growth by creating thousands of jobs here at home in the renewable energy industry. Under this plan, businesses are offered valuable financial incentives to create solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative energy technologies.

“I truly believe this energy package is one that all Floridians can proudly support. It preserves our western waters for military training operations and protects the economic foundations of our coastal communities. And while it expands drilling capabilities on the outer continental shelf, strong environmental provisions will keep our state’s delicate ecosystem safe.”
