House Delivers Pro-Environment Energy Bill

Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) released the following statement in support of the Energy Independence and Security Act, which today passed the U.S. House of Representatives.  Wexler voted in favor of the legislation that makes a dramatic commitment to the environment by investing in renewable energy sources and biofuels, mandates higher vehicle efficiency, and moves the United States closer to energy independence.

“This legislation is the first step in an American environmental and energy revolution.  For too long the U.S. has lagged behind our allies in combating the dangers of global warming.” Congressman Wexler said. “With this legislation we unveil our future energy policy – with a focus on renewable energy, biofuels, and increased energy efficiency.  The legislation also moves us closer to legitimate energy independence and will ultimately save American consumers billions in lower gas prices.”

The Energy Independence and Security Act increases the fuel efficiency of vehicles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, makes a commitment to American-grown biofuels, requires for the first time that 15 percent of our electricity come from renewable sources, saves consumers hundreds of billion of dollars through new energy efficiency standards for a wide range of products, appliances, lighting and buildings, and includes a $21 billion tax incentive package that invests those savings in clean renewable energy and new American technologies.
